Cold Weather Hazards Contractors Should be Aware Of?

?

Cold weather can be refreshing to work in after the summer heat. However, when winter comes it also bring in a new set of concerns contractors should be aware of:?

  1. Driving: Winter driving can be a big concern – especially if you are on the go a lot for your job. In Canada, 30% of vehicle crashes occur on icy, slushy or snowy roads. Having the proper tires and adjusting speed for road conditions are two simple but effective ways to prevent accidents.??

?

  1. Clearing snow: Many of us will find ourselves in a situation when we need to clear snow – whether it is at a work site or at home. Many people will try to get it done as quickly as possible and end up straining themselves. Each year clearing snow sends more than 11,000 people to the hospital with many of these visits being for cardiac issues. Pacing yourself just as you would for any heaving lifting is just as important when clearing snow.?

?

  1. Working from heights: Snow and ice make surfaces slippery and increase falling risks. Snow can also conceal sharp objects and other debris. Proper safety equipment and being aware of your surroundings is especially important at this time of year.??

?

  1. Cold Stress: Cold stress occurs when heat rapidly leaves the body and can lead to illnesses such as trench foot, frostbite or even hypothermia. It is essential to be properly dressed in the winter with insulated and waterproof gear to keep oneself warm.??
